If you’re trying to understand the difference between an NDIS Support Coordinator and a Psychosocial Recovery Coach, you’re not alone.
The two roles can have some similarities. Both may help participants understand their NDIS supports, connect with providers and community services, coordinate supports and build greater independence.
However, there are important differences.
The simplest way to understand it is that Support Coordination can support eligible NDIS participants with different disability-related needs, while Psychosocial Recovery Coaching is specifically designed for participants with psychosocial disability and takes a recovery-oriented approach.
Let’s look at each role in more detail.
What does an NDIS Support Coordinator do?
A Support Coordinator helps an NDIS participant understand and use the supports included in their plan.
According to the NDIA, Support Coordination is a capacity-building support designed to help participants better understand and use their NDIS plan and pursue their goals.
Depending on the participant’s individual needs and plan, a Support Coordinator may help with:
understanding an NDIS plan
connecting with suitable providers
connecting with community and mainstream services
coordinating different supports
helping services work together
building confidence in managing supports
preparing for changes in support needs
developing skills to exercise greater choice and control.
The overall goal is not simply to organise everything for the participant. Support Coordination should also help the participant build their capacity to understand and manage their supports.
For current information, visit the official NDIS information about Support Coordination.
What does a Psychosocial Recovery Coach do?
A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is an NDIS-funded worker who supports participants with psychosocial disability in their recovery journey.
Psychosocial disability can occur when a mental health condition has a substantial and ongoing impact on a person’s everyday life.
According to the NDIA, a Recovery Coach can help a participant:
build capacity and resilience
understand and navigate NDIS supports
organise supports
strengthen decision-making
connect with community services
connect with health and mental health services
work towards greater independence.
Recovery Coaching is recovery-oriented.
This means the support should recognise that recovery is personal. It focuses on the participant’s strengths, preferences, choices and goals rather than assuming that the same approach will work for everyone.
For current information, read the official NDIS explanation of Psychosocial Recovery Coaching.
What is the main difference between a Support Coordinator and Recovery Coach?
A simple way to remember the difference is:
Support Coordination helps eligible NDIS participants understand, implement and coordinate their supports while building their capacity to manage those supports.
Psychosocial Recovery Coaching provides coordination and capacity-building support specifically for participants with psychosocial disability, with a stronger recovery-oriented focus.
Both services should support the participant’s choice, control and independence.
Where do Support Coordination and Recovery Coaching overlap?
There can be considerable overlap between the two roles.
Depending on the participant’s circumstances and NDIS plan, both may help with:
understanding the NDIS
navigating an NDIS plan
connecting with providers
coordinating services
connecting with community and mainstream supports
building confidence
developing independence
navigating changes
helping different supports work together.
This overlap is one reason participants and families sometimes find the two roles confusing.
The important thing is to look at your individual NDIS plan, needs and goals, rather than choosing a service based only on its name.
What are the three levels of Support Coordination?
The NDIA describes three levels of Support Coordination that may be included in a participant’s plan:
Level 1 — Support Connection
This helps participants connect with informal, community and funded supports and build their ability to pursue their goals.
Level 2 — Support Coordination
This provides additional assistance to help participants understand and use their plan and build their ability to connect with and coordinate supports.
Level 3 — Specialist Support Coordination
This is a higher level of Support Coordination for participants whose support situations are more complex and who may require specialist assistance to address barriers in their support environment.
The level of Support Coordination available depends on what is included in the participant’s NDIS plan.
Do I need a Support Coordinator and a Recovery Coach?
Not necessarily.
Having one type of support does not automatically mean you need the other.
The support that is appropriate for you will depend on factors such as:
what is included in your NDIS plan
your disability-related support needs
your personal goals
your circumstances
your existing support network
your available funding.
If you’re unsure, check your NDIS plan and ask questions about what your funded supports are intended to help you achieve.
How do I choose the right Support Coordinator or Recovery Coach?
The right professional relationship can make a significant difference to your experience.
Before choosing a provider, consider asking:
Do they listen to me?
Do they explain things in plain English?
Do they respect my choices and decisions?
Do they understand my disability-related support needs?
Do they have relevant experience?
Will they help me understand my options?
Do they communicate in a way that works for me?
Will they help me build greater independence rather than making every decision for me?
Good Support Coordination and Recovery Coaching should help strengthen your choice and control.
